Re: lifting the mast
http://www.eventides.org.uk/Mast%20lower.htm Hi Mike, if you copy and past the above link in to your browser you will find it again, it is on the hints and Tips page of the main site, with all the pics etc! I used it every spring to hoist our mast with all the rigging on it, I will admit it is easie...

Rudder tube leaks!
Hello John, common problem with inboard rudders! Seen fountains on the stern deck! Yes a grease nipple and waterproof grease is one way, but that assumes you have a bearing in there to grease!?!? Most do not. If you can remove the tiller fitting on the top and gain acess to the top of the tube you m...

shaft wear.
Would not have called 1 mm excessive, but if it makes a noise maybe it is annoying! In which case maybe time for action.
Really there should not be enough play that you can feel it by grabbing the prop, 1 mm is about borderline maybe....

John

Stern bearings
Hi Chris, if it is a cutlass bearing it will be very positively ridged, with just 12 or so heavy ridges. If it were a smooth cutlass there would be 1/2 play in the shaft! Yes there are a few other sorts of outer bearing. I have been shipmates with a solid bronze one, with a greaser inboard that supp...

Rowing a Senior.
As I hold the distinction of being first at two out of the three and second in the last, 16ft police boat sculling races, I can tell you it is very feasable, but darned hard work! Charles Stock is a seasoned salt, and has all the time in the world, to wait for a decent slant in the wind. In today's ...

Stretching a drawing
Maurice was quite used to people wanting to extend boats. His advice was simple, you could stretch everything up to 10% without a problem, but you had to do the lot, length, breadth, depth, ballast, rig etc. Beyond that and it gets tricky as the percentages of ballast etc will have to increase. Buil...

Lone gull II sail area
I have looked up an old leaflet and found the following. Mainsail 248 sq ft No 1 Jib 150 sq ft This is standard bermudan rig of course, and without a bowsprit. not sure as this design needed one as the write up says she was light on the helm, two fingers up to F5, a firm hand above that. hope this h...

Cutlass Bearings
There is only one Cutlass bearing sort. The Cutlass! (Trade name) It is hard rubber and fluted with the shaft running on the tips of the flute ridges and debris being washed away along the channels in between. Reason they eventually wear is often because of a build up of barnacles and debris blockin...

Insurance
I am now using 'craftinsure', as many owners are, see the link on the home page. They certainly did not ask me what radio I had for mine, nor my daughter's boat.... When I get myself a new digital radio, which will happen, as the Coast Guard are now threatening to stop their listening watch to VHF.....

If anyone with a CD needs them and has broadband, I should be able to mail them as pdf files... might put them on the pages. speed formula
Glad you fixed the problem, try square root of waterline in feet divided by 1.3 . An Eventide 24 works out at 5.5 knots an E 26 just over 6 knots It also equates with length of WL in metres, equals speed in knots and hp needed to achive it..... in still water with no wind. Works for boats up to 30 f...
