Re: GH31 - plans for bilge plates ?

Hi. I built the Hinds for nearly 10 years, after completing two for myself. Re the bilge keels, I had a drawing and the original plywood template, both of which are sadly no more. However, there is a lot I can offer to help with the design and fitting techniques. They were 1/2" or 12mm mild steel, g...

Re: GH 26 Keel question

Hi JfJ. The idea of a sacrificial GRP (polyester) grounding strip was almost certainly put on your boat by Terry Erskine. I did the same on almost all of the 5 GH31's and the one GH26 I built and found it very satisfactory. That seems to have been borne out as you found pristine gel coat underneath....

Re: Samson Post - question/warning

Hi, Sorry to hear of your problems. You seem to be much calmer about it than I think I would have been. Terry Erskine built all of the Gh26's except the last one which I built. I'm very surprised about the sampson post breaking. It was always felt to be massive and perfect for being towed by a lifeb...

Re: Insurance?

Hi, I don't know whether it will be of any help but I have always used Coleman Marine in Poole who were a specialist marine insurers, underwritten at LLoyds. When I was building the GH and doing a lot of repairs on old ones, they were very positive and did a special GH policy. For the older boats th...

Re: GH 31 Ketch main mast position

Hi Chris. A month or so ago, I unexpectedly turned up an old and faded, but usable, drawing of the ketch rig, which I sent on to John at Eventides. It's a big drawing (A1 or A0??) with all the basic info on sails masts and rigging. John may not even realise yet that it was included in the middle of ...

Re: Golden Hind 31 cutter rig set up: staysail boom or plans anyone?

Hi Justine. My boom is 2.40m from the centre of the gooseneck pivot (which is mounted on the aft face of the sampson post) to the extreme end. But you can confirm for your boat by measuring when it's more or less horizontal, to the front of the mast. You want a bit of clearance or you will have a pr...

Re: Golden Hind 31 cutter rig set up: staysail boom or plans anyone?

Hi, My last 2 GH's have been cutters with a boomed staysail and I wouldn't have anything else. I knew your boat some years ago when I ran the GH club but I can't remember it after so long. With the 4 ft bowsprit I assume it had the Terry Erskine rig with the 32' mast?? My two have both been the ligh...

Re: Golden Hind 31 rudder blade.

Hi. Terry Erskine made the blades up from Iroko boards. There was a single full length board forming the centre of the stock and the front section of the blade. This was cut from the widest board they had available so as to include as much of the blade as possible and avoid having a butt joint right...

Re: cockpit drain hose?

Hi Gary. You say "all hoses" but your header is cockpit hoses. If you just mean the latter, i.e the two cockpit ones, they are standard 1.5" (38mm) reinforced plastic hose that you can get from any good chandlers. They should cross over to avoid water in the cockpit when she heels. They should be ar...

Re: Wooden fender trim for GH

Hi Gary, I built 7 31's in all after Terry Erskine. The rubbing strake was always in teak to my knowledge and if available, with just a single scarph (i.e in about 16 ft lengths which is almost unobtainable now and fearfully expensive). The reason was that the section was so solid (3" X 2" approx) t...

Re: lug sail

Hi Julio, I don’t know if this will be of any help but, when I was building |Golden Hinds, I got estimates for (aluminium) spars from almost everyone in the UK and I was staggered as to how much they differed. I came to the conclusion that even the “professionals” were not very scientific about the ...

Re: Sailing characteristics Golden Hind

Hi. Something’s wrong somewhere and you will be able to do a lot better. There is a lot missing from what you have said. First, I assume you are talking about a GH31, sloop rig and the 32’ mast as most were, but it’s all relevant. Second, you say roller reefed. Is that the old roller reefing boom fo...

Re: Lone Gull Moulds.

Hi. The GH moulds I sold about 6 years ago were recently for sale again. Keith Wood, Newsons Boatyard. But it's worth noting that the previous owner only sold one hull (to me) for home completion in several years, and the current owner, a very respectable boat yard with all the traditional skills, n...

Re: Golden Hind 31 Bilge Keel Bolt

Hi. Amazingly I've found an old 31 parts list. I fitted 20 (5 pairs each side) M12 x 140mm galvanised bolts with twin washers (top & bottom). A few points to be aware of though. I always fitted an external hardwood pad between keel and hull about 1/2" thick. I believe Terry fitted a softwood one. If...

Re: balance

Hi, I'm only generally familiar with Lone Gull, but over 35 years with GH's including 9 building them I played around with all sorts of things to reduce the weather helm I often had on my first and subsequent boats. Sometimes it could nearly pull your arms out of the sockets! In the end I could alwa...
